American bison-Bison d’Amérique

The American bison, also commonly known as the American buffalo, is a North American species of bison that once roamed the grasslands of North America in massive herds, became nearly extinct by a combination of commercial hunting and slaughter in the 19th century and introduction of bovine diseases from domestic cattle, and has made a recent resurgence largely restricted to a few national parks and reserves.

Le bison américain, également connu sous le nom de buffle américain, est une espèce de bisons qui parcourait autrefois les prairies de l’Amérique du Nord en immenses troupeaux. L’espèce est devenu presque éteinte par une combinaison de chasse commerciale et d’abattage au 19ème siècle de même que l’introduction de maladies bovines provenant d’animaux domestiques. Il a fait une réapparition récente en grande partie limitée à quelques parcs nationaux et réserves.
