The large fields of Mirabel in Quebec are a site of observation of the snowy owl during the winter season. Here a female who probably will leave us in March to its usual territory.
The Great Horned Owl is the second heaviest owl in North America, after the closely related but very different looking Snowy Owl. It ranges in length from 43–64 cm (17–25 in) and has a wingspan of 91–153 cm (36–60 in). The facial disc is reddish, brown or gray in color and there is a variable sized white patch on the throat. Its « horns » are neither ears nor horns, simply tufts of feathers.
Le grand duc d’Amérique est le second plus gros rapace nocturne en Amérique du Nord, le premier étant le harfang des neiges. Sa hauteur est de 43-64 cm. (17-25 po.) et son envergure de 91-153cm.(36-60 po.). Il possède un disque facial qui est de couleur rougeâtre, brun ou gris, il a aussi une tache blanche de grosseur variable sur sa gorge. Les cornes ne sont ni ses oreilles ni de vrai cornes mais seulement une touffe de plumes.
