Léda and De Medici’s fountains-Les fontaines de Léda et De Médicis

The Medici Fountain is a monumental fountain in the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris. It was built in about 1630 by Marie de Medici, the widow of King Henry IV of France and regent of King Louis XIII of France. It was moved to its present location and extensively rebuilt in 1864-66. To preserve the hidden fountain of Léda, in 1858 they had it moved to the Jardin du Luxembourg. Since it was a wall fountain, it had to be attached to something, so they placed it on the back of the Medici Fountain, where it still remains, unnoticed by passers-by.

La fontaine de Médicis est monumentale dans le jardin du Luxemboug à Paris. Elle a été commandée autour de 1630 par Marie de Médicis, veuve du roi Henri IV de France et mère régente du roi Louis XIII de France. La fontaine a été déplacée à l’endroit où elle est a présent et abondamment rénovée en 1864-66. Elle cache une autre fontaine qui y fut annexée en 1858 pour la préserver: Léda. Malheureusement pour cette oeuvre, elle n’est pas remarquée des passants.
